Chapter Twenty-Two
Maddie
By the time I got back to Margareteâs car, it had been nearly an hour since Iâd dropped off Eleanor at the clinic. I got in and switched on my Uber app, letting the car warm up. Thankfully I didnât have to turn down any ride requests while I waited the several minutes for Eleanorâs request to come through. I accepted and headed that way.
Eleanor was standing outside on the curb, her bright purple coat a cheery contrast to the gray building behind her.
I parked and got out to help her in the back. âHello, Miss Eleanor. Did everything go okay?â
âMy doctor put me on a new medicine for my arthritis,â she said as she got into the back. âI hope itâs not too expensive.â
âSurely your insurance will cover it.â
âThey didnât cover the last one.â
I shut her door and got into the driverâs seat, turning around to face her. âYou know, there are resources to help with medication. Did your doctor or pharmacist tell you about them?â
âNoâ¦â
I frowned, hating that she had to worry about affording something she needed. âWould you like some coffee, Miss Eleanor? I have a carafe here with cream and sugar.â
âWell, arenât you a delight?â she said, her voice cracking. âIâd love some.â
I poured some into a cup, then added her cream and sugar and topped it with a lid before handing it back to her, coming to a decision. âDo you need to go to the pharmacy?â I asked. âYou set your house as your destination.â
âI do, but I only have so much money for Uber rides,â she said with a grimace. âNot that I donât like riding with you, Maddie. But I canât afford to make two trips, so Iâll have my son pick it up for me when he comes next weekend.â She looked like she wanted to say something else but wasnât sure she should. âNot all drivers are as sweet as you.â
Had some been unpleasant to her? âIâm so sorry. You can refuse a driver, you know.â
She smiled. âI wish I could always get you.â
âI only do this on my days off from Déjà Brew,â I said apologetically. âBut how about I give you my name and phone number, and you call or text me directly instead of using the app?â
âReally?â she asked, her eyes wide with gratitude.
âReally.â I cancelled the ride request on my phone. âIn fact, weâre off the clock. Letâs go get your prescription filled.â
âOh, Maddie, I canât let you do that.â
âToo late. Already done. Now which pharmacy do you use?â
âStephenson Pharmacy, on 33rd and Vine.â She reached into her purse. âDonât you need to make money? I can pay you.â
âNah,â I said, putting the car into drive. âI need to go to the pharmacy anyway,â I lied.
I headed in that direction while Eleanor told me about her doctorâs visit. The clinic had gotten a new doctor, and she wasnât sure she liked him.
âHe seemed to be in such a rush,â she said. âEveryone is in such a rush nowadays.
